MY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS 2021

Ah, 2020. What a year.

This time last year I was feeling so hopeful for the future. 2020 was looking to be the year. I had positive goals set, lots of events and gigs planned… it was going to be amazing.

How wrong was I.

None of us know how 2021 is going to turn out. Truthfully, I don’t think it’s going to be that different from 2020, for the most part at the very least. However, the motivation has come back. I’m positive that I can still make the most out of the year, just like I did with 2020.

In 2020, I read out a piece of my writing at a workshop/networking event, had the same piece of writing featured on BBC Radio Bristol twice, where I was interviewed the first time live on air. I received a 2:1 in my undergraduate degree, then later returned for two seminars where I was a guest speaker which entailed me reading out my writing and taking a Q&A from the current second year students. I'm also a part of a book called Through the Hourglass. Despite everything, I’ve achieved a lot this year.

So, in the year 2021, I want to achieve even more. I have my expectations raised high. Without further ado, here are my new year resolutions for 2021.

GET HEALTHY/IMPROVE MY MINDSET AROUND FOOD

Man, am I sick of making the whole "get healthy, lose weight" resolution. I was thinking of not writing it here as I have done in the previous years. But, if I’m being completely honest, this will be one of my main focuses of 2021.

Hopefully, I can focus on it in a healthy way. As of now, the end of 2020, weight loss consumes my mind. I’m not interested in being healthy, all I want is to be skinny. That shouldn’t be the goal. Instead, I should be focusing on bettering my health and making myself fit, so I can actually run up stairs without feeling like I’m going to eject my lungs.

I guess, the real goal here is to change my mindset and focus on recovery. All whilst trying to make my body healthy again. I want to learn to feel happy in my own skin. But that doesn’t mean losing weight.

Wow, I’ve started off huge there. I should just stop here but nope we’ve got more to come.

BE ON TRACK TO GET A 2:1 ON MY MASTERS DEGREE

Towards the end of January, I’m returning to university to complete my master's in Marketing. After achieving a 2:1 in my undergraduate degree, I’m determined to do the same in my postgraduate degree.

I probably won't get my grade by the end of the year, but I would at least like to be on track to get a good grade. That means I'm going to have to study hard and work my butt off. It's not going to be easy, but I have faith that I can do it.

No matter what, though, I will be proud of myself and know that I have got far. Much further than I ever expected, to be honest.

RECORD A SECOND EVERY DAY

Maybe there’s not a lot of point recording every day if we’re just going to be stuck at home again. However, I would still like to document the year to see how and if things change. Plus, I really enjoyed recording a second every day the other year. It was fun to watch the month back. I was going to put all the months together at the end of the year but then my phone broke, and I lost everything. Hopefully this year there will be no casualties.

LEARN SPANISH

Now, I'm not saying that I'm going to be fluent in Spanish anytime soon, but I would like to learn more.

I started using Duolingo earlier this year, and I'm really enjoying it. However, I'm not very good at sticking to it.

If I could stick to at least 5 days a week, for half an hour at a time, I'm sure I'll improve. It'll be a lot better than what I'm doing now.

GET BACK ON THE RADIO

As I mentioned before, I was on the radio earlier this year. Back in February, I was interviewed by BBC Radio Bristol about my struggles with Bulimia and a piece of writing I wrote about it. You can read that piece here

In 2021, I want to get back on the radio. It's going to be hard to match the standard of that piece of writing because, in my eyes, nothing I write about could ever be good enough. But hopefully I'll find the confidence to send some more work off to BBC Upload, the show in which my piece was featured. Maybe, eventually, they'll like something else I write.

FEATURE ON MORE BLOGS

During 2020 and the end of 2019, I wrote for a few different blogs. However, I haven't written for any in the last half of 2020. So, in 2021, I want to feature on more blogs. I already have a small list of blogs I would like to write for.

Infact, I would like to do more freelance writing full stop. Get my name out there some more and do what I love the most: write.

TAKE MORE PHOTOS

Back in 2018/2019, I made the same resolution. However, I feel like I've been slacking lately when it comes to taking photos.

Looking back on old photos gives me a wonderful feeling as it reminds me of better times. Capturing happy memories is important, I believe, and I want to continue doing so.

I also wrote on My New Year's Resolutions 2019 post that I struggled with being in photographs myself. Whilst I'm still not completely comfortable being in photographs, I am a lot better now. I get more involved and don't fight when someone tries to take a picture of me. Instead, I smile and get on with it. However, I do hate my smile...

That's it for my 2021 resolutions.

I can't believe it's 2021 already, that sounds so futuristic. Hopefully, we will be seeing a better year ahead. I have my fingers and toes crossed for a return of gigs. In the meantime, stay safe and let's beat this thing, so we can return to some normality.

Oh, and have a happy new year.

Until the next year,

Char.

MY NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS 2019

With only a few days left of 2018, I've been looking back on the year and thinking about what I want to improve on and achieve moving forward. At the beginning of 2018, I had little to no motivation and was on a downward spiral. Things haven't improved much, however my motivation is slowly coming back as the desperation for things to change gets stronger. Because of this, I've given my resolutions a lot more thought than I have done in previous years. Last year I said that I wanted 2018 to be the year that I "get shit done". It was the complete opposite of that. So now, 2019 needs to be that year. My 2019 resolutions: 1. TAKE RECOVERY MORE SERIOUSLY 2018 was the year that I properly started recovery after my mental health plummeted towards the end of 2017. I started seeing a care coordinator fortnightly and went back on my medication. However, I haven't taken it as seriously as I should have. This year I want my mental health to be my ...

The Battle Between University and Mental Health

As my second year on my university course finally nears a close, I look back and realise that I've learnt more about my own mental health than I have in the subject I'm actually doing a degree in. Not exactly what I'm paying over nine grand a year for... I'm tired, my sleeping pattern has been turned upside down and the sense of dread looms as it finally hits me: this year counts. This isn't first year anymore, and there's no second try at this year, Student Finance will only support you for one more year. If you fail this: you're doomed. The fear of getting anything lower than a 2:1 consumes me. It seems to be embedded in every student's mind that if you don't get a 2:1 or a First, then you've failed. Now, this fear has taken up any enjoyment I was having from this course. I'm no longer writing because I enjoy it, I'm just writing to get a grade. But how can you enjoy something when your brain wants to die? How can you even be good...

A Letter From My Body To Myself (TW: Eating Disorder)

In contemplation group you were told to write a letter from yourself to your body (and vice versa.) And my God, you were really horrible to yourself. You called yourself fat, ugly and worthless. Repeatedly, you told yourself to stop eating and that you would have to die if you didn't lose weight. So today, I, your body, am going to write a letter back to you. I'll start of by saying that I understand you were in a really bad place when you said all those things to me. And I would forgive you but you tell me these things daily, even when you're faking one of your "positive" episodes. It has to stop. You wouldn't say these things to anyone else: you wouldn't say them to your mother, your sister, your brother, your friends, or even some random person on the internet. So why are you saying them to your body? It's bullying. Be kind, stop verbally abusing me. When you follow through with these threats of starvation, I feel exhausted. You're a very bu...
